The exhibits of the Royal Ontario Museum are divided into five main floors. Level B2 houses temporary exhibitions, while Levels 1 and 2 are dedicated to native Canadian artifacts and geology, respectively. The Royal Ontario Museum is located on the northeastern campus of the University of Toronto. The museum was part of the University until 1968 when it separated and opened as a separate entity. The museum has undergone two expansions since its founding, most recently the addition of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal building. The new addition is a blend of old and modern styles. While the Canadian exhibits are internationally renowned, many visitors enjoy the Egyptian Gallery, with its nearly 1,500 pieces of ancient Egyptian art. Also available are Greek and Etruscan art. The European galleries feature ancient armor and pieces from the Bronze Age to World War I. First Peoples exhibitions are available in the Daphne Cockwell Gallery, while the Sigmund Samuel Gallery presents Canadian history. Touchable and interactive exhibits are also featured in the CIBC Discovery Gallery. The natural world is well represented with galleries dedicated to birds, insects, and dinosaurs.
The exterior of the ROM was inspired by its mineral collection. Architect Daniel Libeskind designed a building with five intersecting metal volumes inspired by the mineralogy galleries. The ROM’s luminous beacon transforms a secluded corner of the city and welcomes visitors with glimpses of the museum’s exhibitions. The climate of Toronto is continental, but the proximity to the Great Lakes has a strong impact on its temperature. In January, the temperature can drop to the low 20s F, with the wind chill factor reducing the temperature. In July, the average temperature is in the low 70s, with an average of 22 degrees Celsius. The ROM also features numerous dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period. The largest mount is the Chasmosaurus, a dinosaur that looks like an enormous rhinoceros. Another popular specimen, the massive Parasaurolophus skeleton, is on display in the Out of the Vaults section. The ROM has a variety of fossil skulls and bones from ceratopsians, including the great Corythosaurus. The museum’s display of these dinosaurs also includes a large sauropod called Arrhinoceratops.
