You’ve waited months for this. Summer is here and the sun’s warmth and rays are out in full force. But along with the sunshine often comes the pull to play hooky and – well – play!
And while it’s fun to play, we can’t do it all the time. Here are some tips to stay on track and motivated when you want to do anything but _______ (fill in the blank).
1. Don’t Deny It – Plan It:
To resist something is to oppose it, push against it, struggle against it, and try to force it into something other than it is. There is a lot of time and energy that goes into resisting and denying yourself. Sometimes you don’t even know how much energy you’re putting in because it’s a habit. So look for the signals. You know when you are resisting something — your mind festers on the situation or subject, and you feel frustrated, annoyed, and unhappy. The solution – carve out some time and plan for some summertime fun. Take the energy you’re using trying to deny it and use it to constructively carve out some summertime fun.
2. Take a Sunshine Break:
Can you pop outside to make a call? Take your lunch on a bench outdoors. Or even better, take a few minutes to go outside, close your eyes, and feel the sun on your face.
3. Remind Yourself of the Why:
Is the heat making you feel a little groggy and unfocused? One way to refocus is to remember the why. The why of your work or goal. Many of us have difficulty staying engaged once the initial excitement of starting something new has worn off. So remember back to the why, and what about the why that made you excited to start?
4. Remind Yourself of What You’ve Already Achieved:
If you have been taking steps towards your goal for a while, then it can be great to take some time to consider all that you have already accomplished. All long-haul goals take multiple, incremental steps to attain. We forget this when we are constantly looking forward or driving ourselves to do more. No wonder we feel frustrated about what feels like a lack of movement. Instead, take a moment and make a list of the steps you have already taken to reach your goal, and what the results of those steps have been. You’ll probably be surprised at how much you’ve produced. This clarity helps in releasing those feelings of frustration. Pat yourself on the back, and remind yourself of these achievements.
5. Is it Really the Weather, or is it Something Else?
Take a moment here to pause and look inwards to answer this question honestly. If it really is the weather, the above tips are easy and effortless to do. In fact, you’re excited to give one or more a try. But if you feel resistance to these suggestions, roll your eyes, or feel the tension in your body at the thought of doing any of the above, then there might be something else. Something bigger that is underlying your lack of motivation. EFT/Tapping is an excellent technique to examine “something else”. (If you would like to learn more about EFT/Tapping click here).
